Start with your reason for reading
Attach the document and finish this sentence:
I need to understand this because…
That could mean preparing for a meeting, finding a deadline, checking a claim, learning a process, or deciding what to ask next.
Questions that work well
- What is this document asking me to do?
- Which dates, amounts, or conditions matter?
- Where does it support this claim?
- Which terms are defined elsewhere?
- What is missing or left ambiguous?
- Explain this section in plain language without changing its meaning.
Keep the answer traceable
Ask for page numbers or section names. If the answer relies on interpretation rather than explicit text, it should say so. Tables, footnotes, appendices, and scanned pages deserve extra care because they are easier to misread.
If the document affects legal rights, health, safety, or a large financial decision, verify the important passage yourself and involve the appropriate professional.
